City of Beja
The city of Beja is located on a 277m high hill, dominating the vast surrounding plain.
From the top of the highest tower on the Iberian peninsula, belonging to the Beja Castle, we can admire the entire landscape. It is 40 meters high and kilometers of plain as far as the eye can see. There are more than 2500 years of history and many more stories to live and tell.
Pax Julia was the most important Roman city in the current Portuguese territory south of the river Tejo. It was the seat of a bishopric in the Visigothic era and for more than 100 years it experienced the struggles of the Christian reconquest. Mariana Alcoforado's love letters echo in the corridors of the Convent of Conceição, and even today they inspire the most romantic who always find a good excuse to visit us again and again.
